First appearance. 1964 Cliburn recital at the Salzburg Festival. Cliburn was really great at this time! This is the first release of an amazing recording of Cliburn's appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1964, after his shocking victory at the First International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958, when he was the darling of the era. Although the sound is in mono, his clear touch is clearly audible. It is a pleasure to have all of his best performances here, but Cliburn's playing at this time is truly amazing, with an extraordinary aura and energy that overflows. The Barber Piano Sonata, which was the pride of his native America and his specialty, was the highlight of his performance. This sonata, dedicated to Horowitz, requires an incredibly difficult technique, but Cliburn captures the listener's heart with a speedy, clear, and bright performance that is on a different level from Horowitz's strong-armed intensity.The performance is far more inspired than the 1972 studio recording. Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 3 and Beethoven's "Passion" are also painfully sharp with naïve emotion and sharpness. The sheer power of concentration throughout the entire performance makes me almost clap with excitement after the performance. King International
