Renowned Tenor Gedda Makes His Recital Debut at the Salzburg Festival Born in Stockholm in 1925, the renowned tenor Gedda—who took the world by storm—made his first appearance at the Salzburg Festival in 1957. He sang the role of Belmonte in *The Abduction from the Seraglio* and also participated in the world premiere of Liebermann’s *The Girls’ School* (ORFEOR.429962), conducted by Sel and performed by the Vienna Philharmonic. Then, in 1959, while firmly establishing himself as a familiar face at the Salzburg Festival in the role of Ferrando in *Cosi fan tutte*, Gedda also made his long-awaited solo recital debut. Here, we catch a glimpse of Gedda, who boasted a vast repertoire ranging from Baroque arias to rare Respighi pieces, French works by Debussy and Fauré, and even Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich. Among these, the Russian art songs are a program uniquely suited to Gedda, who had a father of Russian descent and was fluent in Russian.
