Description:
Seifried (solo), Walter & the Vienna Philharmonic First-ever official CD release! Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 from 1950. The “Egmont” Overture is published in its entirety for the very first time! Walter, known for having premiered “Das Lied von der Erde” and the Ninth Symphony—and for his deep, special connection to Mahler as one of the composer’s direct disciples from the very beginning of his career—dominated the Salzburg Festival’s Mahler repertoire for the first 40 years. Walter first conducted Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic at the festival in 1926, and two years later, he presided over the Salzburg Festival premiere of “Das Lied von der Erde.” Walter apparently believed these two works were ideal for promoting a deeper understanding of Mahler, and he performed them repeatedly until 1937—*Das Lied von der Erde* in 1931 and 1934, and Symphony No. 4 in 1933 and 1936. Furthermore, in 1936—the 25th anniversary of Mahler’s death—he also conducted the Symphony No. 3, which would later become famous. Perhaps reflecting the conductor’s philosophy, there are currently 13 recorded versions of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 conducted by Walter; however, the 1950 live performance with the Vienna Philharmonic—long renowned for its quality—is finally being released on CD for the first time from an official source. The other two live recordings of the Fourth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic—the 1955 performance in Güden, and 1960 with Schwarzkopf, each enhanced by the soloists’ distinctive personalities; however, Seifert—a regular at the Salzburg Festival—stands out here with his dignified presence and exceptional charm. The “Egmont” Overture included as a B-side is likely making its very first release. While four other recordings by Walter exist, this is the only one featuring the Vienna Philharmonic.
