Fournier, Salzburg Festival Debut Recital 1958 The "cello nobleman" Fournier finally appeared at the Salzburg Festival at the surprisingly late age of 52, when he was already known as a major player in his own right. The only other "late debut" of this kind was that of Wilhelm Kemp, 11 years older than her, which is highly unusual, but her debut recital in 1958 was well worth the long wait. The program is also very attractive, with a Brahms piece that confirms his reputation as a brilliant collaborator with Holecek, a difficult unaccompanied Kodaly piece, a free-flowing Debussy piece, and the Rococo Variations, which are full of elegance. All of these pieces are in Fournier's repertoire, which he has performed several times separately, but this recital itself is believed to be the official first appearance of all of them.
