Featuring a host of Vienna’s finest singers! “The Bartered Bride” shines under the baton of maestro Krobuchar When it comes to Smetana’s masterpieces, “The Bartered Bride” stands out. While Smetana’s operas are typically performed only in the Czech Republic, “The Bartered Bride” is an exception, enjoying great popularity in German-speaking countries as well. This CD features a 1960 production at the Vienna State Opera based on Kurt Honolka’s German-language libretto. Directed by Günter Renner, this was a new production staged the previous year and is considered one of the most accomplished productions of the Vienna State Opera during the Karajan era. The cast featured many of Vienna’s leading singers of the time, including the familiar faces of Kument and Seifried. The conductor was Krobuchar, renowned as a student of Klaus and Matacic. This is a masterful performance in which the local flavor of Eastern Europe blends seamlessly with the international spirit of the Karajan era in Vienna. King International
