Following *Concertos for Violin, Piano, and Strings* (ORFEO761092), composed in his early teens, this album features the complete symphonias written by the child prodigy Mendelssohn between the ages of 12 and 14. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra is a prestigious ensemble that has been active for over half a century since its founding by Karl Münchinger in 1945. Initially focusing primarily on the works of J.S. Bach, the orchestra gradually expanded its repertoire to include the Viennese Classical period; in recent years, it has broadened its scope to include works by Glass and Kancheli, and is recognized as one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. Michael Hofstetter, who succeeded Dennis Russell Davies as principal conductor in September 2006, was born in Munich. He began his career as Kapellmeister at the Wiesbaden Theater and as General Music Director at the Gießen Theater. Through his productions of Handel’s operas such as *Alcina* and *Giulio Cesare*, Hofstetter has established himself as a specialist in Baroque music and and an expert in authentic performance practice. In 2008, Hofstetter and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra were highly acclaimed for their work and received the European Chamber Music Award. Given that Mendelssohn is said to owe much to Mozart—the “original child prodigy”—and the music of his era, this Sinfonia, which vividly conveys that influence, is precisely the kind of piece in which Hofstetter and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra excel, as evidenced by their track record.
