Description:
Müller-Schott’s Mendelssohn: Elegance and the Depth of Lyricism Daniel Müller-Schott is a young cellist who has been making a remarkable name for himself in recent years. He has recorded the cello works of Mendelssohn, whose 200th birthday was commemorated in 2009. Mendelssohn’s cello works are all pieces adorned with sweet and beautiful melodies that showcase his true talent as a melody maker. The two cello sonatas—No. 1, passionate and powerful while adhering to the classical style, and No. 2, charming with its rich melodies and diverse expression—are particularly noteworthy. This is an outstanding performance in which Müller-Schott’s elegant music truly shines. The Concerto-style Variations, consisting of a theme and eight variations, is a work in which the piano plays a prominent role alongside the cello’s brilliance. The highlight is the well-synchronized—and at times fiercely clashing—music between Müller-Schott and Girard. She delivers the enchanting melodies of song-like works—such as “On the Wings of a Song,” “Song of the Reeds,” the Album Blatt, and “Songs Without Words”—with superb expressiveness. Müller-Schott’s cello tone, which combines sweetness with depth, is a perfect match for Mendelssohn’s compositions on this album. King International
