Damrau / Late Romantic Lieder Collection Among young German sopranos today, Diana Damrau stands out as the undisputed leader in both popularity and talent. A native of Günzburg, a town in eastern Bavaria, she studied at the Würzburg Conservatory and sang at regional theaters in Germany before making her debut at the Bavarian State Opera in 1999 as Zerbinetta in *Ariadne auf Naxos*. Since then, her career has taken off at a breakneck pace; she has appeared every year at the Salzburg Festival since her debut there in 2001, and in December 2004, she sang the title role in Salieri’s *Europa Riscoperta* as part of La Scala’s reopening season. She made her debut at the Met in 2005. Just as roles like Zerbinetta and the Queen of the Night in *The Magic Flute* have become her signature roles—where she excels in high notes and coloratura—she also possesses a remarkable freshness in her mid-range and rich expressiveness, earning high praise for her Lieder performances as well. In her 2005 recital at the Salzburg Festival, her performances of Wolf and Strauss—particularly in the second half—were superb.
