Mastering her Stradivarius “Munz” (made in 1736), she delivers a performance of Shostakovich’s two masterful violin concertos with powerful expressiveness. The First Concerto features a somber tone and is a carefully considered piece of music in which emotions are strictly controlled. Her power and her bold approach to this challenging work create an intense sense of tension for the listener. While the Second Concerto tends to be overshadowed by the splendor of the First, its intricate melodies emerge with remarkable effectiveness at key moments. Her resonant, deep tone brings the melancholic melodies to life. This recording allows one to sense the remarkable growth of Arabella Miho Steinbacher, whose artistry evolves with each work. Her collaborator, Andris Nelsons, is a young conductor (28 years old as of 2006) born into a musical family in Riga, the capital of Latvia. He has served as principal conductor of the Latvian National Opera since 2003 and assumed the position of music director of the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra beginning with the 2006–07 season.
