Accompanied by the famous Viennese conductor Cripps! Here comes a rare recording from ORFEO D'OR, a collection of songs by the famous soprano Konetsuni. Hilde Konecny (1905-1980) was born, raised, and died in Vienna. Incidentally, her sister Annie Konecny is also an acclaimed soprano. Both were unable to build international fame because their 30s and 40s coincided with the turmoil of World War II and the postwar period, but Hilde was a very popular star in Vienna in the 1940s and early 50s, and Furtwängler performed her twice in "Die Walkure" at La Scala and RAI Rome, both with Giacomo Konetsuni. in the "Valkyrie," both with Konecny as Sieglinde. The recordings here are from 1942 and 1943, in the midst of World War II. It is interesting to note that the accompaniment is by the famous Viennese conductor Josef Klips.It is said that Cripps, who was uncooperative with the Nazis, was severely mistreated after Austria was annexed by Germany, and had to make do with singing lessons to survive.
