The Fourth Installment of the Shostakovich Series by Boreiko & the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra Symphony No. 5, Carefully Crafted at a Slower Tempo Russian conductor Andrei Boreiko, born in St. Petersburg in 1957, began his Shostakovich symphony series while serving as a guest conductor (2004–12) with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. The series has consistently been characterized by an intellectual and lucid approach, while also skillfully bringing out the composer’s characteristic cynical edge. To date, five symphonies—Nos. 1, 4, 6, 9, and 15—have been released. The newly released Symphony No. 5, like the previous releases of Nos. 1 and 6, is a live recording from 2011. As the Fifth Symphony is not only Shostakovich’s most famous work but is already regarded as a masterpiece and a 20th-century classic, this is a piece on which he naturally places great emphasis—yet this is Boreyko; he never wavers from his usual composed demeanor. Here, Boreyko generally adopts a slower tempo. With a total running time of 49 minutes, the performance is characterized by a grand, masterful musical presentation. The outer movements—and especially the finale—are meticulously crafted over nearly 12 minutes with a deliberate pace; while appearing clear and straightforward, this approach successfully brings out the symphony’s complex facets. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra’s meticulous ensemble playing and powerful sound, which perfectly complement Boreiko’s conducting, also shine through.
