Kempe & Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra 1961 live performance of Strauss's "Zarathustra Speaks" and Bartok's "The Wonderful Chinese Officials" Suite. The album is a rare recording of a guest appearance by the famous German conductor Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) with the then South German Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra) in 1961. The program, which mainly features Strauss's works, is a masterpiece, and probably all of the contents are officially released for the first time. Kempe is well known as an expert on Strauss, including his stage works, as he was a Kapellmeister (1949-1953) of the Staatskapelle Dresden, a prestigious orchestra with close ties to Strauss.Kempe's only recording of "Zarathustra" to date is a session recording made ten years later in 1971 with the Staatskapelle Dresden, and it is considered one of the best recordings of the complete orchestral works, an immortal achievement. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has made a number of guest appearances, also shows a consistently good storytelling ability, starting from the famous opening. The coupling is Bartók's Suite from the ballet "The Wonderful Chinese Officials. The reissue from the master tapes in the SWR's authorized archives ensures clear sound quality, even in monaural.
