Once again, this performance is a must-hear, featuring the ensemble’s unique instrumentation—with period instruments used exclusively for the brass section—and Fai’s aggressive conducting style shining through. Volume 19 takes a different approach from Volume 18 (98582), which focused on the Salomon Set, featuring a program centered on works from Haydn’s early years when he served the Esterházy family. It includes Symphony No. 26, subtitled “The Sorrow,” as well as Symphonies Nos. 27 and 42. ★Among his many symphonies, No. 26 is one of the earliest works composed in a minor key. It was formerly known as the “Christmas Symphony,” but since it was discovered that it was actually composed for Easter, it has been named “Lamentation” in reference to the Gregorian chant used within the piece. In the second movement, one of the highlights is the beautiful oboe solo singing the “Lament” melody over the gentle, rhythmic canon played by the lower registers. But true to his reputation as a “genius” in the early music world, Fai captivates the listener right from the opening unison of Symphony No. 26’s first movement with its intense power. In particular, the brilliant brass attacks that appear throughout the piece are striking, and their intensity is so powerful that one is almost tempted to give the piece the subtitle “Astonishment.” While Fai creates a powerful sound in the first movement, in the second movement he makes a complete turnaround, crafting a very gentle and delicate ensemble. This shift in expression is truly befitting a genius of the early music world. In the third movement, the striking sound of the natural horns adds just the right amount of weight to the ensemble, resulting in an elegant performance that allows the listener to clearly feel the rhythmic center of gravity of the minuet. ★Throughout this program, the oboe and natural horn demonstrate a remarkable presence. That said, in Symphonies No. 27 and No. 42, the strings’ lively ensemble shines brilliantly, and one is overwhelmed by Fai’s dynamic, driving energy. The Haydn Complete Works series, which has been ongoing for over 10 years, is now approaching its halfway point.
