Honorary Conductor Norrington & the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra Latest recording from November 2011: Schubert’s Symphonies Maestro Norrington, known as “the master of the period approach,” conducts the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra—where he currently serves as honorary conductor—in a recording of Schubert’s symphonies. Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 were recorded in November 2011, shortly after he stepped down from his 13-year tenure as principal conductor. Norrington has recorded Schubert’s symphonies on previous occasions: with the London Classical Players—an orchestra using period instruments—he recorded “The Great” in September and recorded the “Great” Symphony in September and October 1988, the Fifth and the “Unfinished” in March 1989, and the Fourth and Sixth in May 1990—all studio recordings. In addition, he made a live recording of the “Great” Symphony with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2001, and in 2002, he made a live recording of Symphony No. 3 and the “Unfinished” with the Camerata Salzburg, where he had served as principal conductor. Thus, for Norrington, Symphony No. 4 marks his return to the work after an 11-year hiatus, and his Symphony No. 5 marked his first re-recording in 12 years. Compared to his previous recordings, the total playing time of these new recordings has increased by approximately 7 to 10 percent, suggesting that his interpretation has shifted toward a more expansive, song-like expression while maintaining a keen attention to detail. Speaking of Norrington, his April 2012 visit to Japan, where he conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestra, was well-received, widely demonstrating his vigorous creative drive and continued vitality.
