Opitz, a Master of the German Piano Tradition, Presents the 11th Volume of Schubert A Rich Selection Including the Masterpiece Piano Sonata in A-flat Minor, D. 958 The 11th volume of Opitz’s Complete Schubert Piano Works features the Piano Sonata in A-flat Minor, D. 958, as its centerpiece, along with the Adagio in B-flat Major, D. 505, the “Hungarian Melody” in A minor, D. 817; the “Galop and Eight Ecossaises,” D. 735, Op. 49; and the “10 Variations in F major,” D. 156. The Piano Sonata in A minor, D. 958, titled “Schubert’s Last Works: Three Great Sonatas”; it is the first piece in a trilogy of posthumous works dedicated to Schumann by the publisher. The key of C minor was originally associated with Beethoven, and this work—written with that in mind—can be considered the culmination of Schubert’s Beethovenian influence. Gerhard Oppitz has made a name for himself as a leading representative of the German piano tradition and continues to perform today as a master of Schubert and Beethoven. The series of Schubert concerts in Tokyo—spanning four years and eight performances since 2010—will finally come to a close this year, but this series has served to reaffirm the greatness of Schubert’s piano works.
