Master conductor Rilling’s live performance of Verdi’s “Requiem” Rilling, who has established an unshakable reputation as both a Bach expert and a specialist in choral music, has recorded Verdi’s monumental “Requiem” live. Rilling had recently garnered acclaim in May 2010 for performing Verdi’s “Requiem” with “Dudamel’s orchestra,” the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra; here, however, he teams up with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra—a group well known as “Norrington’s orchestra.” While the raw power characteristic of Verdi is certainly present, above all, the orchestra’s pure tone blends seamlessly with the choral harmonies that Rilling draws out, creating a beauty that defies description. The soloists include Fondung, a frequent collaborator and favorite of Rilling, and Orgonassova, who has sung numerous Verdi operas. On bass was Colombara, a Bologna native with a wealth of experience who, just one month prior—in March 2009—had sung Verlek in a Temirkanov recording; together, they formed a truly stellar lineup.
