Description:

<The second collection of SWR broadcast recordings by virtuoso Anda features solo recitals of Schumann and Chopin, the height of pianism. Anda's SWR broadcast recordings of Chopin's First, Rachmaninoff's Second, Brahms' Second, and Schumann's Piano Concerto (94.208) have been well received. The second volume is a solo recital. The inclusion of Haydn and Liebermann in the repertoire for the first time is not to be missed, and with the exception of Chopin's Etude, which has been previously released on Eulodisc, the other recordings themselves are all first time releases, which should please fans of the music. As if to prove that Anda was an exceptional virtuoso, there are several known alternate performances of most of the pieces on the album. The two Schumann pieces in particular have been performed in six different ways, and the two Chopin pieces in particular have been performed in six different ways. The "Symphonic Exercises" were session recorded in Berlin in 1943, London in 1953, Cologne in 1954 for broadcast (AU23409), Salzburg in 1956 (ORFEOR295921), and Berlin in 1963 for stereo AU23409) and a stereo session recording in Berlin in 1963. The "Carnival" was recorded in Berlin in 1950, London in 1955, Salzburg in 1956 (ORFEOR 295921), Cologne in 1960 (AU23409), and Salzburg in 1972 (ORFEOR 742071). ORFEOR742071) in Salzburg in 1972. Next, in Chopin, "Ballade No. 1" was recorded in two different ways, following a session recording in London in May 1956, while "Etude, Op. 25" as a complete work was recorded in five different ways.Other known live recordings include a 1955 session recording for broadcast in Cologne (AU23409), a 1956 session recording in London, a 1960 live recording in Salzburg, and a 1965 live recording in Ascona, Switzerland. The other two species are Ravel's second live recording, made in Salzburg in 1972 (ORFEOR742071). Brahms is the second Brahms, following a session recording made in London in 1957. The quality of the program, which has been continually refined with Schumann and Chopin at the forefront, is superb, and the crisp reissue of the SWR recordings brings the performances to life.
