A Collection of British Cello Sonatas Performed by Germany’s Rising Star, Moser Moser, a young German cellist who has garnered attention with his releases of Russian cello sonatas (93.176) and the “Composers Contemporary with Brahms” series (93.206, 93.207, 93.208), has garnered attention. His latest album is a collection of British cello sonatas. The program features works by composers whose initials all begin with “B.” For Bridge—known as a renowned violist and conductor—chamber music was the genre that best illustrated the stages of his creative development. Composed between 1913 and 1917, the cello sonata makes extensive use of the chromatic scale, and the melancholic tone that pervades the entire work seems to reflect Bridge’s feelings regarding the ravages of World War I. Britten’s Cello Sonata—composed in 1961 by a composer who had stayed away from instrumental composition for the previous ten years—is the first of five works born out of his friendship with the virtuoso Rostropovich. And then there is Bax’s “Legend” Sonata. Composed in 1943—effectively the final creative period for Bax, who passed away in 1953—this work is notable for its drifting melodic lines and supremely romantic style. King International
