This 18th volume features Symphonies Nos. 89 and 102, as well as Symphony No. 105, which is also well-known as a “concerto symphony.” In a sharp contrast to Volume 17 (98633), which focused on Haydn’s early works, this program centers on the “Salomon Set” period. ★ Symphony No. 89 was composed alongside Symphony No. 88, the “V-shaped” symphony, for violinist J.P. Tost’s tour of France, following the composition of the so-called “Paris Symphonies.” From the striking opening unison—which makes you want to hum along, “Sho, sho, shojoji♪”—you’ll be thoroughly drawn in by Fai & Heidelberg’s aggressive performance. The vivid contrasts in dynamics and expression are as striking as ever. Once again, Fai employs a unique instrumentation that uses period instruments exclusively for the brass section, and—particularly in the third movement—the tone of the period horns makes a strong impression. Even more impressive is Symphony No. 105! This work is charming for its chamber-like ensemble, featuring numerous solo passages interwoven throughout the symphony and a dialogue between soloists on violin, cello, oboe, and bassoon; the way it takes your breath away right from the opening orchestral section is a true display of Fai’s signature style. The intense attack of the brass section is truly striking. The overwhelming power of the orchestra serves to make the intricate harmonies of the solo instruments stand out even more.
