Cambreling & SWR Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra: *Afternoon of a Faun*, *Petrushka*, and *The Tragedy of Salome* The third installment in a series of masterpieces associated with the Ballets Russes, led by the renowned impresario Diaghilev. This collection features three works: “Petrushka,” performed in 1911; “Afternoon of a Faun,” from 1912; and “The Tragedy of Salome,” from 1913. First, opening the album is “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” the breakthrough work by Debussy that was inspired by the eponymous poem by the Symbolist poet Mallarmé and directly led to his being labeled an Impressionist. After this fantastical, dreamlike interlude, the album continues with a masterpiece that fully showcases Florent Schmitt’s distinctive style. Much like Strauss’s opera, which also draws on episodes from “Salome,” the work unfolds in an exotic, eerie, and mysterious world, culminating in the madness-filled finale, “The Dance of Terror.” This passage seems in some ways to foreshadow *The Rite of Spring*, and in fact, this work is dedicated to Stravinsky. The program concludes with Stravinsky’s *Petrushka*. Since Cambreling demonstrated an exceptional sense of color and crafted the previous performance of *The Rite of Spring* (93.196) with such care, expectations are high for this work—which exudes the most colorful charm of the three great ballets.
