The latest live recordings celebrating the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in 2006 are a huge hit! Mozart by Norrington & the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra = Commemorative Album for the 2008 Japan Tour = Simultaneous release of two titles, including Symphony No. 40, “Prague”! Since Norrington assumed the position of principal conductor, he and his flagship ensemble, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, have spent 10 years developing what is known as the “Stuttgart Sound.” With a style that consistently advocates for the recreation of the works as closely as possible through performance practices of the composer’s era—such as strictly avoiding vibrato in the strings—this approach has garnered tremendous acclaim with each release, starting with the complete Beethoven symphonies. Now, ahead of the completion of the six-volume set, the Mozart series is already being hailed as the culmination of this endeavor. To coincide with their 2008 tour of Japan, Volumes 3 and 4—which include Symphony No. 40 and the “Prague” Symphony—were released simultaneously; with these releases, all three of Beethoven’s late symphonies are now available. And what boundless energy and enjoyment! Yet all of this is made possible by meticulous research and historical analysis; in particular, the string instrumentation—which corresponds to the period of composition—has been proven in previous releases and remains the series’ greatest highlight. Specifically, Symphony No. 22 features 4 first violins, 4 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, and 3 double basses; Symphony No. 8 features 6, 6, 4, 3, 3; No. 33 and the “Post Horn” Symphony—both composed in 1779—are 6–6–2–2–3, and the “Prague” Symphony and No. 40 are 12–12–8–6–6. There is likely no other example that demonstrates such distinct differences in sound so clearly. Furthermore, this structure clearly highlights the importance of the effects created by woodwind and brass instruments. In addition, the continuo is clearly audible in No. 8, No. 22, No. 33, and the “Post Horn” Symphony; from the “Prague” Symphony’s powerful opening strike to the meticulously crafted tempos and phrasing of No. 40—everywhere you look, there are astonishing musical devices at work, so you can never let your guard down.
