Norrington’s second recording of the “Fantasy” is a brand-new live performance from 2003—his first in 15 years since his earlier recording (1988/EMI) with a period-instrument orchestra. Just as with his previous live Beethoven complete works, this innovative and electrifying “Fantasy” with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra—his trusted ensemble thoroughly trained in period performance practices—is a shock to the system! The first three movements are of such ecstatic beauty they send shivers down your spine. In stark contrast, the transition from the “March to the Guillotine” into the “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath” is thoroughly grotesque. The eerie, grinding double bass, the ferocious tuba, and the piercing strikes of the timpani—this is the truly innovative and abnormal sound it was meant to be. Eventually, it reaches a frenzied coda, culminating in a finale with an outrageous accelerando that seems to crumble away. This masterful performance strongly reinforces the feeling that Norrington, at last, has fully captured the outlandish music of the megalomaniac Berlioz. The re-recorded overture, too, is dazzlingly vivid. The recording quality is also excellent.
