Paredes not only connects the past to the present, but also bridges the gap between the musical cultures of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the Old and New Worlds, building a bridge between the pre-Columbian culture of Mesoamerica and the modernity of the West. The ceremonial music, incantations, and calendars of the indigenous cultures of her homeland are also an important source of inspiration in her compositions. The title "Altazor" can be translated as "parachute descent. It is composed to a text extracted by Paredes from a text by the Chilean poet Uidobro. It expresses the loss of reason, so to speak, as consciousness becomes clouded and the ability to articulate language is lost in the process of parachuting from a high altitude. Paredes took fragments from the poem's seven songs and composed a monodrama. Also worth listening to are "Epitafio," a work written in response to a death in the composer's family, and "Siphonophorae," inspired by a visual art piece that takes its inspiration from the world of marine life.
