Starting with a destructive orchestral attack, the voices pound out the words, and the tension is intense from the outset. The narration is also urgent, and the power of words is at the core of the expression. Various quotations from Gregorian chant, Monteverdi, Schein, Bach, Handel, Mussorgsky, gospel music, etc. are inserted, and a world of religious and operatic music emerges, as if multiple consciousnesses are going on simultaneously. Eötvös's own conductor brilliantly transforms this complex work into a sonic masterpiece, a 50-minute epic that can be listened to in one fell swoop. The three movements of "To the Unknown Victims," a purely instrumental orchestral work, are just as powerful as the words, and are also a portrait of today's world. The three movements, each of which is about a person's journey for salvation, are full of delicate solo passages, and the skillful use of each instrument and the creation of color is astonishing.Pappano's detailed conducting is excellent, and he expresses the work's twists and turns with exquisite precision.
