Comparing the Early Works and Recent Compositions of Germany’s Leading Composer, Riem Riem is known as a precocious genius and a prolific composer. He began composing at the age of just 11. This CD features four string works, ranging from the “String Quartet in G Major,” written when he was 14, to the 2015 piece “GestezuVedova.” The “String Quartet in G Major” begins with a clearly defined exposition of the theme and evokes the feel of early Beethoven’s works, which were influenced by Haydn. The “String Quartet” written two years later, in 1968, is in a similar style. As time passed, the “Epilogue,” composed in 2013, is a leisurely string quintet reminiscent of Schubert’s Romanticism. Amid atonal harmonies that linger like a thin veil, an intense exchange of pizzicato notes gradually begins. “GestezuVedova” is a homage to the Venetian avant-garde painter Emilio Vedova and is characterized by a flamboyant, percussive style.
