Super-precise harmonies that would astonish even Haydn! The sutras of Ikkyu also make an appearance.Born in Wiesbaden in 1936, Zender studied composition under Foltner. The "Dialog mit Haydn" (Dialogue with Haydn), written in 1982 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Haydn's birth and performed at the Donaueschingen Music Festival, uses Haydn's "Astonishing Symphony" as its source material. Zender's exquisite sense of harmony is on full display in this monstrous work, in which the orchestra is divided into three groups, each of which must be tuned 11 cents out of tune. The two pianos are tuned to the orchestras of "Group 1" and "Group 3" respectively, resulting in a pitch shift of 22 cents (about one-fifth of a semitone). They are superimposed to create a hazy, oozing cluster. Haydn's simple melody emerges surrealistically and is gradually swallowed up by the percussion instruments that gain momentum. Zehnder's brilliant conducting is also noteworthy.Issei no kyo" and "Nanzen no kyo" are vocal works based on the Muromachi period Zen monk Ikkyu Sojun. The former is sung by a soprano soloist and the latter by a chorus, and the mysterious philosophical world that unfolds from the text of the sutra is one-of-a-kind.
