This is where WERGO began WERGO’s first release: “Pierrot Lunaire,” conducted by Boulez! WERGO, the renowned German label specializing in contemporary music. Its landmark first release, in 1963, was this LP of *Pierrot Lunaire* conducted by Boulez. This legendary recording, which laid the foundation for the label, has now been remastered and released on CD by WERGO. *Pierrot Lunaire* is a representative work of Schoenberg’s atonal period. It is written in the “melodrama” style—instrumental music composed to accompany spoken dialogue. The “melodrama” genre took the 19th century by storm; although it fell out of favor for a time, it regained popularity around 1910. While Schoenberg’s composition of this work was not exactly cutting-edge, it shines in history as a quintessential example of the genre. The composition features a 12-tone accompaniment part performed by five musicians playing eight instruments, interwoven with a spoken melody (Sprechstimme) (also known as Sprechgesang—a technique in which a note marked with an “X” on its stem is first sung precisely at the written pitch, then immediately altered to a higher or lower pitch)—weave a mysterious world that is so vivid and unforgettable once heard. The actress (more precisely, a speaker or reciter) Albertine Zeme suggested that he write this piece; it is dedicated to her, and she also performed the premiere in Berlin in 1912. This recording was made about 50 years after the premiere. The booklet includes comments by Boulez from the time of the release; after listening to a 1941 recording made by Schoenberg himself with Erika Wagner-Stiedli, whom he trusted, he described it as “hopelessly outdated to our ears today,” and It also describes the process of trial and error that led to this performance—including seeking advice from Leonard Stein (who was also Schoenberg’s assistant) after hearing Schoenberg himself perform the Sprechstimme—which is equally fascinating.
