The Arditti String Quartet and Star-Studded Guests Mayumi Miyata, Naoko Yoshino, and Toshiya Suzuki Weave Toshio Hosokawa’s World of Silence! WERGO presents the second installment in the Arditti Quartet’s series of works by Toshio Hosokawa. While their recording of the “Calligraphy” (Six Pieces for String Quartet) (WER6761), but this release features an even more impressive lineup: in addition to the string quartet, it welcomes guest artists including Mayumi Miyata on the shō—an instrument indispensable to any discussion of Hosokawa’s works—Naoko Yoshino on harp, and Toshiya Suzuki on recorder. The collection features works in which Hosokawa’s signature world of tranquility is rendered with ever-greater precision. Tracks 3 and 5 were recorded specially at Tsuda Hall. In Track 3, the recorder at times produces a sound reminiscent of the shakuhachi, while in Track 5, the harp undergoes various transformations—at times functioning as a basso continuo for the string quartet, and at other times with a sound that seems to engulf the quartet entirely. Track 2, “Song of Mourning” (a solo viola piece), is a world premiere recording; it is a work that gradually induces a trance-like state as you listen. Hosokawa describes his music as “inviting the listener into a ‘state of silence and nothingness,’” and his Zen-inspired, Japan-rooted soundscape continues to captivate audiences from around the world, transcending religious and cultural boundaries.
