Description:
Wonderfully musical: a perfect balance of intellect, technique and musicianship The German pianist Thomas Hell, admired by both Brendel and Kurtag, in a committed account of Ligeti's Etudes A complete recording of Ligeti's formidably difficult Etudes for piano. The performer is Thomas Hell, the young German pianist praised by Alfred Brendel and Gyorgy Kurtag alike. Ligeti's Etudes for piano were written over a span of sixteen years and fall into three books (Book 1, six studies, 1985; Book 2, eight studies, 1988-94; Book 3, four studies, 1995-2001). Ligeti loved playing the piano himself, and the results are elaborately worked pieces of extraordinary intricacy. Their defining feature is layering: written polyphonically, they set different rhythms (different placements of the strong beat) in different voices - polyrhythm - and even different tempos in simultaneously sounding lines - polytempo - which makes them exceptionally hard to play. Yet when those difficulties are perfectly surmounted, the music that emerges is like nothing else. Hell has performed these studies many times in concert, and completed this recording in only three days. Aimard's account of the Ligeti Etudes is the famous one; here at last is a worthy new recording. Thomas Hell, of whom Brendel said that he "combines intellect and virtuosity," was born in Hamburg. He won first prize at the Orleans International Piano Competition and has been a prizewinner in several other international competitions. He currently teaches at the Hochschule fur Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover and the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, and also gives masterclasses in Japan. His repertoire runs from the Classical period to the present day, with a particular affinity for the music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Having heard him live, Kurtag described him as possessing "an exceptional gift for understanding Ligeti's music, interpreting it and playing it with the highest degree of technical command."
