Cage’s “Music of Numbers” Series: TWO3 Music for a Sho and Five Shells Filled with Water During the last six years of his life, Cage composed what is known as the “Music of Numbers.” “Music of Numbers” is titled with a number, which refers to the number of performers or the number of sections in the work. Furthermore, when there are multiple works for the same number of performers, they are distinguished by superscript numbers. For example, “TWO3,” included here, is the third piece in a series for two performers. “It is only now that I feel I am finally writing beautiful music,” Cage said in 1990. That same year, he met shō player Mayumi Miyata and was commissioned to write a piece for the shō, a traditional Japanese instrument. Cage was deeply impressed by the timbre of the shō—composed of 17 bamboo tubes—and by its versatility: up to six tubes can be played simultaneously to produce a single note, or each of the six can produce a different tone to create complex effects. Furthermore, this encounter with the shō allowed Cage to see a culmination of the “Zen” spirit he had been exploring since the 1940s. This piece, “TWO3,” is characterized by water-like movements (gradual transformations, a flow interrupted by silence, etc.). The shō part is performed by world-renowned Chinese shō player Wu Wei. Unlike the Japanese shō, the Chinese shō consists of 37 bamboo tubes. In addition to the specified shō and conch shell, an accordion also makes an appearance. This was based on the two performers’ belief that the timbres of the sheng and the accordion share certain similarities. As you listen to the instruments—at times producing their own distinctive sounds, and at other times blending seamlessly into a single, unified tone—you are enveloped in a mysterious stillness and seem to be led into a world of meditation.
