The overwhelming tone clusters of Volumina, plus Musica ricercata in an organ version * Dominik Susteck, who made such a striking impression with his organ version of Stockhausen's Tierkreis - Twelve Melodies of the Star Signs (WER 6736), now turns to Ligeti. * Ligeti left only three works for organ (Volumina, Harmonies and Coulée), but they are not merely important landmarks in the development of his compositional language: they opened up new paths for the modern organ repertoire. * Volumina is a work built from tone clusters. Melody, rhythm and harmony are set aside, and the piece reaches the listener as a spatial rather than a temporal art; the sheer power of the organ, Susteck's skilful registration and a magnificent acoustic combine to splendid effect. Harmonies, the first of the Two Études, consists of a continuously sounding ten-note chord that is gradually transformed. In Coulée, figuration that keeps moving in tiny increments, like the whirring of insect wings, changes shape amoeba-like as it goes. * Musica ricercata is a set of eleven pieces written by Ligeti before he turned thirty. It was originally conceived for piano, but it proves fascinating on the organ too. The first piece is built entirely on the note A - single notes, As doubled at the octave, and rhythm as the third element (a D appears only at the very end). There is a sense of being gradually bound tighter and tighter by the finely woven sonority, a force the piano cannot match. The pieces that follow likewise restrict their material to the barest minimum; the fourth, a waltz in the manner of a barrel organ, is heavy with menace and works marvellously on the organ, while the famous eighth piece, with its serial character, is given a nimble rhythmic profile and an effective array of stops. * Susteck's own improvisation deploys a wide range of colours, from sounds that can only be described as noise to wind chimes and marimba-like timbres. He plays with such abandon that one almost fears for the instrument. * 2013 marked the 90th anniversary of Ligeti's birth, and this is a highly attractive disc built around his landmark organ works.
