Reem String Quartet Collection A poignant “Grave” dedicated to the memory of Thomas Kakuschka of the Alban Berg String Quartet A masterpiece: String Quartet No. 11! ★Reim wrote numerous string quartets (12 numbered works alone, though No. 2 is missing), and no two of them share the same style. Reim himself viewed the string quartet as a unique combination of instruments, in which the wide range—spanning from the low register of the cello to the high register of the violin—enables diverse forms of musical dialogue; he intentionally distanced himself from the Classical and Romantic traditions. ★Although designated as String Quartet No. 11, it was actually completed after No. 12 (2000/01). Work on it began in 1998, and it was completed in 2010. It reaches its climax through repeated contrasts between restraint and outbursts, as well as between simple passages and virtuosic sections. It is a large-scale work consisting of four movements, with a performance time of approximately 35 minutes. ★“Interscriptum” bears the subtitle “A Duo for String Quartet and Piano”; the string quartet is treated as a single instrument, and the piece is written in the form of a duet between the string quartet and the piano. It is a fascinating work that explores the dialogue that unfolds between the two. ★ “Grave” is a work dedicated to the memory of Thomas Kakuszka (1940–2005), who was the violist of the Alban Berg String Quartet. The Alban Berg String Quartet premiered many of Reim’s works, and Reim dedicated his String Quartet No. 4 to them. The opening of “Grave” wanders through three keys: A minor, A major, and E-flat minor. This is followed by a melodic section, in which the descending second interval—heard intermittently—symbolizes a sigh. Although the piece concludes with a sense of purification and redemption, it leaves the listener with a lingering sense of sorrow. ★The Minget Quartet is named after the 18th-century Spanish philosopher Pablo Minget, who advocated that art should be loved by the masses. In addition to undertaking a project to record the complete string quartets of Riem, the ensemble has recorded the complete string quartets of Luzicka and is working on a project to perform the complete string quartets of Jürg Widmann. At the same time, they are a versatile group active across multiple genres, having frequently performed with artists such as J-P. Saraste and Gerhaher, among others, and is active across a wide range of genres. King International
