Gauverki, the solitary genius cellist, navigates Cage’s works with bowing as intense as body painting. It is a life-or-death performance, as if he were climbing to the tip of the towering, jagged iceberg known as “John Cage” and dancing there naked. The fourth track, “Variation I (1958),” is a solo cello arrangement by Gauverki and represents the very essence of chance music. The sonic world woven by Gauverki’s otherworldly bowing seems like a cry from the depths of the human soul. The final track, “Etudes Boreales,” shares its title with a piano piece of the same length; the two versions—for cello and for piano—can be performed simultaneously.
