Rachenmann—a new album after a long hiatus! The ultimate world of ultra-low volume, where almost nothing can be heard except for the spindly, wobbly “Kappon” played on the flute. A collection of works by Rachenmann, the “department store of special playing techniques.” An eccentric album consisting entirely of works performed at an ultra-low volume—where, even with the volume turned all the way up, you can hardly hear anything—except for “Spindly Kappon” (for solo flute, voice, and cello) and “temA,” a piece that recreates the atmosphere of a haunted house. Even with the volume turned all the way up, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the violin solo “Toccatina” (Track 2). The untitled piece (Track 4) is also performed at an extremely low volume, but if you listen very closely, it seems to showcase some virtuosic technique. It seems these pieces could only be performed by musicians who derive a somewhat masochistic pleasure from the experience. All of these are products of Lachenmann’s unique philosophy: to help people rediscover musical instruments through composition. Indeed, in (4), for example, it’s astonishing to hear just how many different timbres can be produced simply by the clarinetist tapping the keys. [Comment provided by King International]
