Beethoven: Mass in C Major, and others Bernius & the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, Hofkapelle Stuttgart Although the “Mass in C Major” is a rich and substantial work from Beethoven’s middle period, it remains somewhat overlooked, overshadowed by his late “Missa Solemnis.” It is characterized by an approachable charm and a generous beauty that share certain affinities with his Symphony No. 4, Piano Concerto No. 4, and Violin Concerto, all composed around the same time. In this Mass, which adheres to the style of traditional sacred music, the choir plays an extremely significant role. Bernius, a master in this field, draws out every nuance of the work using period instruments and an ensemble suitable for early 19th-century music—a smaller, more airy arrangement. As a result, it is striking how even the parts that tend to get lost in performances with modern instruments and larger ensembles gain a stronger presence here, making this a highly noteworthy release, especially when paired with the world premiere recording of Cherubini’s work. [Bernius] Born in 1947 in Ludwigshafen, southern Germany, Bernius studied at the Stuttgart State Academy of Music and the University of Tübingen. While still a student in 1968, he founded the Stuttgart Chamber Choir, and the two have been working together for over 40 years since then. During that time, he has earned high acclaim, primarily in Germany, and has received numerous awards. Bernius is well-versed in early music and performs works ranging from Bach to the Classical period using period instruments; however, for works from the mid-19th century onward, he adopts a style featuring a relatively small orchestra playing standard instruments, delivering performances that showcase the choir’s expressive power.
