This compilation documents how R&B musicians successfully covered country songs, and while everyone is aware of the enormous influence of rhythm & blues on country in the mid-1950s, the reverse is also evident as far back as the postwar era. After all, while Wynonie Harris may be crooning Louis Innis' "Good Morning Judge" or Hank Penny's "Bloodshot Eyes," the Griffin Brothers, Fatman Robinson, and Sonny Knight may all have fallen for one or two of Hank Williams' classic tunes. B.B. King and the Platters offer contrasting arrangements of Tennessee Ernie Ford's immortal hit "Sixteen Tons," while the Griffin Brothers, Fatman Robinson, and Sonny Knight each take one or two Hank Williams classics and give them a snazzy R&B spin. Who would have guessed that Scatman Crothers, Smiley Lewis, and Joe Riggins would do a hillbilly cover?
