Katsaris has been drawn to Saint-Saëns since his youth: he gained admission to the Paris Conservatoire playing Saint-Saëns's own examination piece, the Allegro appassionato, and studied with Monique de la Bruchollerie, who left legendary recordings of the composer's music. The 2021 centenary was therefore an ideal opportunity. The programme gathers a wealth of rare transcriptions: the solo piano version of the Symphony No. 3 "Organ" by the American music theorist Percy Goetschius (1853-1943); the Piano Concerto No. 2 as arranged by Georges Bizet, a close friend of the composer; Le carnaval des animaux complete, in the version by Lucien Garban (1877-1959), an arranger for the Durand publishing house and a friend of Ravel; and the composer's own solo piano versions of the Bacchanale, Africa and the Hymne à Victor Hugo. The centrepiece is L'Assassinat du duc de Guise of 1908, one of the very earliest film scores. At the age of seventy-three Saint-Saëns took up the challenge of a new art form and secured his place in history as the first classical composer to write original music for the cinema. Seven years after the premiere, in 1915, he noted that "the royalties tell me that my music has not disappeared from the picture houses". The solo piano version by Léon Roques (1839-1923), well known for his arrangements of Debussy and Ravel, is the one most often played at screenings at the time. A DVD is included in which Katsaris's performance is synchronised with the actual film footage. The print is the complete version obtained by the Piano21 label from Lobster Films and digitally restored in high resolution for this project. The booklet (English, French and German; the Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation) is not to be missed either, with notes on each work and arrangement, a detailed essay on the film and a generous selection of illustrations.
