Lavranga's "Dido" World Premiere Recording! Melism, a label dedicated to the discovery of unknown Greek music, has released a 3-CD box set that is a compilation of the works of Dionysios Lavranga (1864-1941), one of the fathers of modern Greek music. Born into an aristocratic family in Kefalonia, Lavranga studied at the Conservatory of Naples and then at the Paris Conservatory under Dreve, Massenet, and Franck. After returning to Japan, he led the Greek music world as the founder of the "Greek National Music School" and as a conductor and educator. The main opera, "Dido" (1909), is a large-scale lyric tragedy that is considered one of his best-known operas. The score had long been lost and confused, but conductor Byron Fidetzis revised the manuscript score and brought it back to life as the first Greek opera recording by a Greek orchestra. This dramatic work combines the fluidity of French opera with Greek passion. The margins and CD3 collect his important orchestral works. These colorful and accessible works include the First and Second Greek Suites, which use Greek folk material, and the Capriccio for Violin.In particular, the "First Greek Suite" is known as the work that marked the beginning of the Greek National Music School.
