The theme is “1955” in Greece! A collection of works by Theodorakis and Christou! Mikis Theodorakis (1925–) composed the ballet music *Erofili* (later renamed *Passacaglia for Two Pianos*) in 1955 while studying at the Paris Conservatory under Eugène Bigot and Olivier Messiaen. This work is one of Theodorakis’s most eccentric and enigmatic compositions, yet from the opening depiction of an archaic landscape to the evocation of a cathedral organ in the finale, it foreshadows later works such as *Axion Esti* and *Canto General* (The Great Poem), and can be regarded as a significant work that heralded Theodorakis’s future development as a composer. The two cycles based on poems by Paul Éluard, written in 1958, are exceptionally beautiful works notable for their harmonic writing and the use of the Byzantine liturgical ison (basso continuo). Yannis Christou’s (1926–1970) *Six Songs on T.S. Eliot*, composed in 1955, can be considered the culmination of his acoustic period, long before he turned to the world of electroacoustic music. Christou’s music perfectly captures the atmosphere of Eliot’s poetry, revealing the composer’s immeasurable talent and his ability to move audiences and performers alike. *Prelude and Fugue* was composed in Egypt in 1944, during the period when Christou was studying piano under the renowned Greek pianist Gina Backauer. While the prelude, with its repetitive motifs, foreshadows minimalist music, the fugue is tonal and culminates in a radiant apotheosis in D major. Performing these works is Angelica Katariou, a renowned mezzo-soprano who has earned international acclaim for her recordings of vocal works by Skarkottas, Xenakis, and Falla. They are joined by pianists Christophe Sirodot and Nikolaos Samartanos, who have actively recorded works by Skarkottas, Feinberg, Ullmann, and others. Tokyo M Plus
