A New Recording by Johannes Plamzoller! A Collection of French Sonatas for Two Violins! Johannes Plamzoller, a Baroque violinist of the “21st-century generation” who has spread his wings from South Tyrol to the world. He is a young virtuoso who leads Ensemble Diderot and the International Baroque Players, and is also an active member of his mentor Rachel Podger’s Brecon Baroque. Through his independent label, “AudaxRecords,” Plamzoller has unearthed and recorded various “little-known works,” earning international acclaim, including a nomination for the German Record Critics’ Award. His latest release is a collection of French sonatas for two violins without basso continuo. His collaborator is the Spanish Baroque violinist Roldán Bernabé, who has been a member of Ensemble Diderot since 2014. The setting is mid-18th-century Paris, where Italian virtuosity—which had advanced the role of the violin as a solo instrument—swept into France, attracting many master violinists. Jean-Pierre Guignon (Guignon) was active as a popular violin duo alongside Mondonville. Among the many masters of the time, Louis-Gabriel Guillou stood out as particularly talented, passionate, and tragic. Although the details of his career are unclear, Étienne Mangin was hailed as a “renowned violinist” at the Concerts Spirituels. And Jean-Marie Leclerc, whose works for this ensemble are relatively well-known.
