French violinist David Grimal's third recording of the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, this time with a 1710 Stradivarius and a 1740 Tourte bow. The recordings were made when he was approaching his 50th birthday. The Stradivarius of 1710 has a bass bar (an internal component of the instrument that reinforces the front plate) installed differently from the baroque varioins, so it cannot be played at the pitch of the time and is played at A=440Hz. The bows were made at the same time that Bach composed these works, bringing out the unique articulation and heavy tone technique. The recording was made in a true fusion of then and now, and combined with the excellent acoustics of the recording location, it is a unique Bach appearance. The Abbey of =Royeaumont was built in 1228 and declared a historical monument in 1927. It is the largest Cistercian abbey building in the Ile-de-France region centered on Paris. It has a magnificent cloister and one of the most beautiful Gothic-style dining halls in France. =David Grimal has performed on major stages around the world for 30 years and regularly performs as a soloist with numerous orchestras. Many outstanding contemporary composers have written new works for Grimal, and as a sought-after chamber musician, he has been invited to perform at the most prestigious international music festivals. In parallel with his activities as a soloist, he founded "Les Dissonances" about 15 years ago. Since then, Grimal has led the orchestra as its artistic director." Les Dissonances is the only orchestra in the world that regularly performs major symphonic works without a conductor and has performed in the most prestigious concert halls throughout Europe. Many prestigious orchestras have followed its example and asked Grimal to perform with them. As an extension of this spirit of "sharing," L'Autre Saison is a season of concerts created by Grimal in support of Parisian outdoorsmen.Grimal was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture and Communication of the French Republic in 2008.
