Gary Hoffman plays the legendary Nicola Amati cello, formerly owned by Leonard Rose. From the very opening of Sonata No. 1, you are drawn in by the cello’s tone, which embodies passion, darkness, strength, and tenderness all at once. In the opening of the first movement of Sonata No. 2, where the hidden passion seems to burst into flame, the two performers are perfectly in sync. The way they continue to develop the music with fervor while maintaining a sense of gravitas and restraint is a mark of true veterans. Pianist Claire Désert is a renowned French pianist who entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 14, where she won first prize in both chamber music and piano classes. After completing her master’s degree, she studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory to further hone her skills. Her achievements in chamber music are particularly remarkable, and she is a highly valued artist who enjoys the deep trust of renowned masters such as Anne Gastinel (cello), Emmanuel Strosse (piano), and Teddy Papavrami (violin). Her sound, which has been highly praised in France as “light, passionate, and possessing a unique, cat-like suppleness,” harmonizes beautifully with the Nicola Amati played by Hoffman.
