Although written for only four instruments and played by four people, this work, which has the force of a symphony, showed composers of the first half of the 19th century the immense potential of the string quartet genre. The refined acoustics of the Thalich String Quartet leave long silences that tell the story of an unspoken sermon. Yet each note contains a superlative word, as if it were the weight of serenity."
