Mendelssohn (1809-1847)

Description:

A must-listen! The world acclaimed cellist Gary Hoffman's cello works by Mendelssohn are "beautiful sound, perfect technique, and a high level of artistry". The singing in the Sonata No. 2 is truly elegant, and the interaction with the piano is superb, filled with the freshness that is unique to Mendelssohn. The Sonata No. 2 was dedicated to Count Wilholski, a Russian nobleman who was also a very skilled cellist, and who owned the 1662 Amati instrument used by Hoffmann. It is quite possible that Mendelssohn had in mind the tone of the Amati cello, which makes this performance all the more glorious. This is a disc to be enjoyed slowly, and to appreciate the many works that are the crystallization of Mendelssohn's genius. Hoffman made his debut at the age of 15 at London's Wigmore Hall.He then moved to New York and at the age of 22 became the youngest professor of music at Indiana University, where he began his international career by winning the Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris in 1986. In addition to the traditional cello repertoire, he has a deep knowledge of contemporary music and has dedicated many cello concertos. He has been a regular guest of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York and has lived in Paris since 1990. Pianist David Selig was born in Australia. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Ciccolini from 1976, and then continued his studies with Jeffrey Parsons and Guido Agostini. He has won prizes at the Sydney International Piano Competition and The Hague International Piano Competition (accompaniment category).
