Description:

Who knew Ysaÿe and Primrose had left behind such treasures! A full taste of the viola’s charm!! This album takes the form of a collection of works by Ysaÿe, the “god of the violin,” and Primrose, the “god of the viola,” but its contents are truly astonishing. Five of the 14 tracks are world premiere recordings. The rest of the lineup is like a treasure chest, featuring pieces you’ve likely never heard before, as well as viola arrangements of violin works. The first surprise is two Chopin waltzes arranged by Ysaÿe. When it comes to Chopin arrangements by Ysaÿe, the “Ballade No. 1” and the “Waltz in E-flat minor” were already well-known, but it’s surprising to discover that there were also two lyrical pieces in E minor and F minor. They’re so evocative that you might mistake them for works by Wieniawski. Even more intriguing are the two unaccompanied viola pieces by Ysaÿe. While Ysaÿe is said to have often played the viola himself, both the “Introduction”—which showcases the instrument’s beautiful tone—and the “Divertimento No. 3”—which displays extraordinary virtuosity—are unaccompanied works that invite the listener to savor them at length. William Primrose was a British viola virtuoso; he initially majored in violin and studied under Ysaÿe—who was 46 years his senior—in Brussels. However, recognizing his aptitude, Ysaÿe recommended that he switch to the viola, and Primrose went on to become one of the greatest performers of the century. Believe it or not, Primrose arranged works by Poulenc and Arthur Benjamin for viola and piano—including the popular “Jamaica Rumba.” This, too, is a masterful arrangement that makes full use of the viola’s unique qualities. Violinist Dejan Bogdanović was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and studied under Viktor Tretiakov. Viola player Pierre-Henri Züleb is a virtuoso who won the Premier Prix in the viola division at the Avignon Conservatory at age 13 and at the Paris Conservatory at age 16. He also became one of Primrose’s last students. He is also dedicated to chamber music and recently formed the “Primrose Ensemble,” named after his mentor. King International
