Description:
Improvising, Inspired by Cinema Jean-Baptiste Dulce, France’s Genius Pianist An artist performing at LFJ2026. Jean-Baptiste Dulce—a pianist behind the camera and a film lover seated at the piano—invites listeners on a journey through film history through the art of improvisation. ~After spending a long time reflecting on the relationship between my cinephilia (love of cinema) and improvisation, *AFilmBy* was conceived as a “declaration of love” for the films and filmmakers that have deeply moved, surprised, and shaken me—and that still linger in my heart. The works listed here represent only a tiny fraction of the vast world of cinema. Regardless of era, language, or production conditions, these films share a single commonality: an extremely personal worldview—a poetics of the gaze and an unquestionable mastery of form—that captures the world from a unique perspective. ~ Rather than attempting to recreate these works, Dulce pays homage to them by relying on the inspiration they evoke—sometimes taking a detour around the films, and at other times following the images stirred within herself. Two of France’s leading actors and filmmakers, Mathieu Amalric and Bertrand Mandico, participate in the project by reading Dulce’s texts and their own. The recording took place over three days, with no editing whatsoever applied to any of the tracks; the rule of improvisation was strictly adhered to. Dulce dedicates this album to all filmmakers who never cease to observe, contemplate, and recreate every dimension of the world. She also hopes that listeners will be inspired to rediscover that unique and irreplaceable joy of projecting film in a theater and watching a movie on the screen. Just as Abel Gance (the master of French silent cinema) said, “Cinema must be ‘music for the eyes,’” here, music becomes “cinema for the ears.” MIRARE
