A Collection of Music for Wind Instruments Popular in the 19th Century Thanks to the patronage of Emperor Joseph II of Austria, music for wind instruments enjoyed a golden age in the late 18th century. “Swingin’ Partita” sheds light on the wind music repertoire emblematic of Vienna around 1800, presenting works for wind octet by Franz Kronmer, Beethoven, Antonio Casimiro Cartellieri, Salieri, and others. All of these works are rich in virtuosity yet delicate, with a complexity hidden beneath their apparent lightness. For this album, Stradivaria commissioned composer Guillaume Connesson to write a new piece. Based on the classical partita form, this work vividly unfolds Connisson’s signature brilliant timbres and rhythms, creating a striking contrast with the “spirit of entertainment” that characterized wind music around 1800. Stradivaria is an ensemble that explores the Baroque and Classical repertoires while adopting a performance approach grounded in historical insight. Founded in 1987 by Daniel Cuyer, the ensemble has been led by oboist Guillaume Cuyer since 2023. Its activities focus on Baroque music and the wind instrument repertoire of the late 18th century.
