Philippe Grivard is a renowned French harpsichordist and a core artist on Johannes Plamzoller’s independent label, “AudaxRecords.” He has appeared on numerous albums as a member of the Ensemble Diderot and as Plamzoller’s accompanist. This second installment in a series focusing on the lesser-known chamber cantatas of Alessandro Scarlatti—the “master of Italian Baroque” who composed over 800 chamber cantatas in his lifetime—features Emmanuelle de Negri, a soprano highly regarded in the early music world, particularly for her work in French Baroque. For Scarlatti, chamber cantatas served as a “musical laboratory” for his large-scale opera productions. The highlight of this album is *Nero il Tiranno* (Nero the Tyrant), which takes a historical tyrant as its subject. Despite its minimalist instrumentation—consisting solely of soprano and basso continuo—it depicts the emperor’s madness and obsession with power with an intensity reminiscent of opera, illustrating just how thrilling a musical experience the salons of the aristocracy were at the time. Four of the five pieces are world premiere recordings. While inheriting the stylistic beauty showcased in the first volume, this release focuses more on the “dramatic expression of the characters,” with De Negri’s versatile singing vividly highlighting the complex emotional nuances crafted by Scarlatti.
