Description:
[With Japanese Commentary] Celebrating the 15th Anniversary of Plumzoller’s Ensemble Diderot! The Complete Goldberg Trio Sonatas! Johannes Plumzoller, a Baroque violinist of the “21st-century generation” who has spread his wings from South Tyrol to the world, Johannes Plamzoller is a leading figure of the next generation—he leads Ensemble Diderot and the International Baroque Players, and is also an active member of his mentor Rachel Poggi’s Brecon Baroque. In 2013, he launched his own label, Audax, and has since pioneered numerous lesser-known works in the Baroque repertoire. Ensemble Diderot, founded in 2008, is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. While the ensemble has previously tackled concertos and various forms of chamber music with flexible lineups, this 15th-anniversary album marks a return to their roots—the “trio sonata,” a core part of their repertoire—featuring works by Johann Gottlieb Goldberg’s trio sonatas (all four works attributed to him) and one trio sonata by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the eldest son of J.S. Bach. When it comes to J.S. Bach’s trio sonatas, the six organ trio sonatas (BWV 525–530) are particularly famous; these works were written for the education of W.F. Bach, and it is believed that Goldberg also honed his skills as a composer and performer through these works; however, he left behind no trio sonatas in the standard “two violins and basso continuo” configuration. Therefore, excluding arrangements, for ensembles performing trio sonatas in the standard configuration, there are no works that bring them closer to Bach than Goldberg’s four extant sonatas. Goldberg’s sonatas occupy a central position in the repertoire, and their musical content, creative ideas, and compositional sophistication are more than sufficient to rival the works of the greatest composers; Plumzoller even states that they belong to the lineage of the finest trio sonatas—namely, the trios from J.S. Bach’s *The Musical Offering*. Goldberg’s refined and dense counterpoint bears a striking resemblance to that of J.S. Bach, and the Sonata in C major (DurG13) was once known as a work by J.S. Bach (BWV 1037). Tokyo M-Plus
