Description:
The complete Toccatas—a bold work by the young Bach—performed on a special piano perfectly suited to this music! A brilliant, vibrant, and crystal-clear sound Renowned French pianist Laurent Cabasso has recorded all seven of Bach’s Toccatas. Cabasso plays the “Opus 102” by Stéphane Poléro—an instrument he fell in love with, calling it “the piano worthy of Bach.” This 102-key parallel-strung piano is characterized by its sustained resonance, clarity across the entire range, and crystalline tone. These characteristics work to magnificent effect in Bach’s polyphonic compositions, bringing the music to life. These seven toccatas, believed to have been composed when Bach was in his twenties, blend the influence of his predecessors, such as Buxtehude, with his own attempts to forge a distinctive style. The compositions are skillfully crafted through a fusion of various elements, ranging from fast, improvisational passages to fugues that make full use of counterpoint and dramatic harmonic progressions. Precisely because these are “toccatas”—which allow for free, unconventional development—they are brimming with inspiration, and one could say this music foreshadows many of Bach’s later masterpieces. The liner notes also include an explanation in Japanese. Laurent Cabasso Born in France in 1961.
